An irreversible change has come

Nick Perry is hardly in a position to criticise Labour because it did not back the Liberals’ motion on tax credits in the House of Lords (The people should know, October 30).

What people up and down the country do know is that for five years the Liberals signed up to the most extreme measures and legislation, exceeding even the Thatcher years in their brutality.

And for that reality, Nick, the Liberals were all but wiped out in every type of election since the coalition was formed.

The other reality is that Labour has elected a genuine progressive as its leader with the overwhelming support of its membership, now the largest of any party.

Politics has changed irreversibly. We still, however, have to survive until 2020, the next general election. Witness that even while we are being told of growth and recovery and how ‘austerity’ has all been worthwhile – bonuses all round – what remains of the steel industry is being torn to shreds by venal capitalists.

And does this coterie of wealthy, 19th century public school amateurs laughingly called the government give a damn? No! Just one more thing.

You might also care to reflect that had the Liberals not joined the Tories in 2010, this struggle for tax credits – amongst other things – may not now be necessary.
