Miller delighted as Roffey push Wickers all the way

Marcus Strevens 72nd-minute goal moved second-place Wickers to within five points of leaders Sidlesham, who three games left still to play.

The in-form Wickers have lost just two games all season, but were pushed all the way by Roffey side who have found their stride in recent weeks.

Miller hailed his side’s showing and said: “This was a performance that deserved something so I was very disappointed we got nothing, but was pleased how we played and we deserved the plaudits given to us by Southwick officials and players.”

There were good signs from the first whistle with Roffey winning control of the midfield and containing Southwick without creating too many goal-scoring opportunities, but not giving their opponents any either.

The game continued in the same manner until Southwick broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Roffey gave the ball away.

A raking cross-field pass sent winger Strevens away and he managed to beat Lewis Blaney and score.

It was a good performances for Roffey to take into their Division 3 Cup semi-final against Sidlesham on Wednesday night.

The two sides face off at Steyning’s Shooting Field ground with kick-off at 7.45pm.
