Free parking is being abused

The free parking at Grosvenor Gardens with toilets close by is an asset to our town but it is being abused by people who use it for a camping holiday, avoiding campsite fees.

People who can afford to run motor homes can surely afford to pay to stay at a camp site, like the lovely one in Barley Lane, instead of blocking limited parking spaces.

At 8.30am last Saturday morning, when runners were having difficulty finding places to park for the popular seafront Park Run that starts at Grosvenor Gardens, I counted at least 21 motor homes which had clearly been used for an overnight stop, some with bikes on the back, towels drying on the front and so on.

There were also several other, smaller vehicles that might have been used for the same purpose.

On the same side of the road as the gardens, parallel to the pavement, was a huge mobile home too big to park in the area on the sea side of the road. That particular one is regularly seen there, so is probably lived in for considerable lengths of time.

Perhaps a parking meter should be introduced with charges high for overnight and low or non-existent during daytime hours.
