Department of do nothing

Well, the Hastings Bexhill link road is up and running and I certainly see the benefits and am sure the residents of Bexhill Road, do too.

How unfortunate that the obvious consequences of the new road seem to have been apparent to everyone apart from the highways people at East Sussex County Council.

Ridge West is a regular shambles now – it frequently was before the link road opened – but avoidable congestion is now far worse where Junction Road links The Ridge and Sedlescombe Road North.

How many times does traffic grind to a halt as one or two motorists wanting to turn right onto or off Junction Road at both ends have to wait for someone to wave them through as huge queues build up behind them?

And as for the morning and evening peaks – traffic backs up from Junction Road to both roads off the Queensway roundabout.

Roundabouts both ends of Junction Road are the obvious solution – indeed there are several locations on The Ridge where this most simple of traffic regulating methods needs to be in place.

No need to alter the road layouts, just paint the necessary markings on the road, put up some signs and see how they work.

But the Department of Do Nothing (aka the highways people) talk of value for taxpayer money (the same tax payer who has seen another £3m shrugged through onto the Link Road budget) and, er, do nothing. But never mind – good to see that the do nothing policy is being applied everywhere on some of the appalling cart tracks in Hastings that surround our gleaming link road.

And the same people responsible for this inactivity now congratulate themselves on fixing pot holes – potholes created by the same people cutting back on maintenance.
