Age UK's new shop will help local people grow older in a '˜great place'

An expectant crowd gathered at Priory Meadow shopping centre, Hastings last week for the launch of the new Age UK charity shop which is set to benefit the town's elderly.

The official opening of the new shop took place on Monday October. Deputy Mayor of Hastings, Councillor Nigel Sinden marked the occasion by cutting the ribbon.

The shop’s manager, Helen Pescott, says they will be selling traditional charity shop fare including clothing, accessories, toys, bric-a-brac and books along with brand new bedroom furniture and mattresses at bargain prices. “Supporting the local community, this shop will be a destination to collect NHS hearing aid batteries and will sell equipment to make everyday living easier including folding walking sticks, pick up reachers and shoehorns,” she said.

“As well as offering something for everyone this fantastic shop raises money to help older people locally and make East Sussex a great place to grow older.”

Stacey Bell, Priory Meadow centre manage says they welcome Age UK East Sussex to Priory Meadow. “The store looks great, and has a really positive buzz about it today, long may it continue”, she said.

Dozens of people joined in the celebratory opening day many keen to grab a bargain or two. Ms Pescott said: “We are so excited to have this opportunity and can’t wait to welcome the local community to this new shopping experience at Priory Meadow and for them to find out about the support offered by Age UK East Sussex for local older people.”

Age UK East Sussex is an independent, locally-focused charity that is led by the needs and aspirations of those in later life. It states that it recognises that there are challenges for people as they age, and social isolation, poverty, age discrimination all impact on people’s quality of later life and says its vision is that East Sussex is a great place to grow older.

Age UK’s new shop at Unit 42, Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, Queens Road, Hastings, is open Monday to Saturday 9-5.30pm and 10-4pm on Sunday. Donations of items to sell are welcomed. www.ageukeastsussex.org.uk
