World top four for marvel Max

A Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club starlet narrowly missed out on a medal in a global competition.

Max Richardson, crewed by Nick Redding, from Oxford, finished fourth overall in the 49er Youth World Sailing Championships last week.

Forty-one top under-24 crews from 13 different countries lined-up in Travemunde, Germany, and at the half-way stage they were in equal first place with eventual winners Niels Gormsen and Anders Thomsen, from Denmark.

But two mediocre results in difficult, shifty winds dropped Richardson and Redding to fourth place in the 12-race series.

Richardson and Redding are part of and have been training with the Team GBR 49er Olympic Squad, which is the strongest in the world, for the last 18 months, this season in Spain, Majorca, France, Finland and now Germany.

They are both in their first year at university - Richardson was a pupil at Claverham Community College - and are performing very well against much older, fully-funded sailors. They are eyeing selection for the 2016 Olympics.
