Woodroffe praise for Javed

SIDLEY captain Scott Woodroffe had nothing but praise to lavish upon Imran Javed and Wes Tate for the honourable way in which they conducted themselves in the face of some "disgraceful" harassment from Littlehampton last weekend.

A camera was set up to film Javed's bowling action from the first ball, he was allegedly intentionally barged by an opposing batsman and was continually sledged when he batted. The scrutiny harks back to a complaint lodged by Littlehampton about the Pakistani phenomenon's supposedly suspect action earlier in the season which was later thrown out. Debutant Tate was also sledged when he stepped out to the crease.

But Woodroffe was delighted with the way his players kept their composure against such extreme provocation. He said: "Imran was a model pro and he showed us a really good example. We all felt for him and he was just subjected to pressure the whole game - it was really non-stop. That was sour grapes from how well he played in the first game (Javed took six wickets and scored a half century in an emphatic Sidley triumph). It was just a disgrace and it was beyond belief really.

"Wes Tate came in to play his first game for the first time and he was an absolute credit to himself and the team. I'm really proud of the team, they were great. We just took it and no-one got into any physical confrontation.

"I think we probably will write a letter (to the Sussex League). I think it would be remiss of us if we didn't do anything and the umpires might put it in their report."

Sidley hope to return their minds to the cricket when they entertain Roffey tomorrow (Saturday). Chris Deeprose and Tyrone Wildman should return but Peter King (bruised wrist) and Kevin Deeprose (strained back) are doubtful. Guy Montgomery is unavailable.
