H&B were narrowly beaten at home to Old Dunstonians last weekend having drawn their previous home game against Folkestone a fortnight earlier, conceding late tries in both.

Smith said: “We’re fighting very, very hard and we know that we’ve got some wins in us. Our learning curve at this level is very steep, but we want to improve this squad and compete at this level. We’re getting better, but I don’t want to wait until after Christmas to get better; I want it to happen now.

“It was a good effort on Saturday. We let it go in the last two or three minutes, but the way we played was better and considering they’re fourth in the table, we were outstanding in a lot of aspects of our game. We’ve still got one or two issues, but our scrummage was brilliant and our backs played with some purpose.”

Next up for H&B is a London & SE Senior Vase second round tie at home to London Exiles tomorrow (Saturday). Kick-off at William Parker is 2pm.

H&B are second-bottom of London Three South East, while the Exiles are fifth in London Three South West and beat H&B’s league rivals Heathfield & Waldron 27-0 at home in round one.

Rye Rugby Club, meanwhile, is without a fixture tomorrow and will return to Sussex One action at home to Worthing Senior I next Saturday (November 15).
