What a Relief as Glenco lend support

GLENCO Youth Football Club boasted more Sport Relief participants than any other club or organisation nationwide according to the charity themselves.

Between 250 and 300 players and parents plus 80something-year-old Keith Chandler from Sidley United's youth section completed the Fitness First Mile at Bexhill High School on Saturday lunch-time.

Stuart Scott of Sport Relief said: "I imagine they would (have had the largest contingent). We had clubs sign up but certainly not 250 people. I was thinking the most would be something like 150 but that's first class. We're really grateful for their support and they really have gone the extra mile!"

Each runner donated 1 to take part but additional funds were raised from the subsequent barbecue, swelling the total to somewhere between 500-600.

It was announced by the BBC on Saturday night that Sport Relief 2004 has raised 11,078,359 on the day alone - money that will be used to change people's lives, both here in the United Kingdom and in some of the poorest countries in the world.

What was undoubtedly the biggest Mile event ever kicked off at 1pm with an estimated 81,000 people turning out at over 150 events all over the UK. Celebrities taking part included Prince William, Welsh rugby great Jonathan Davies and former S Club stunner Rachel Stevens.
