Weekend football preview - Utd top

Hastings United's best start to a league campaign for years sees them sit top of the fledgling Ryman Premier table after claiming maximum points from their opening two fixtures.

The U's got the ball rolling with a 2-0 win at home to highly fancied Wealdstone last weekend before coming from behind to beat Maidstone United 4-2 in midweek. The last time they won the first couple of games was in the 2004/05 season.

Hastings manager Tony Dolby, however, isn't getting too carried away by his team's impressive start. "It's always nice to be top but it's only two wins out of two and I don't really look beyond that."

Hastings play two games over the bank holiday weekend starting with a trip to Hendon today (Saturday) followed by a home clash with Cray Wanderers on Monday (kick-off 3pm).

"Hendon away is always a tough game. It was pretty even for an hour last year and we ended up winning 3-1 with some late goals. The year before we got turned over 4-0," Dolby said. "I do believe this year more than ever it's about us and what we do and how we set our stall out."

Midfielder Lee Carey has left the club and came on as a substitute for Ryman Premier rivals Tonbridge Angels last weekend.
