Water polo teams make a splash

FIVE water polo teams competed against Hastings Seagull for the magnificent Observer Trophy at Summerfields Sports Centre on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Hastings' twin town Dordrecht were unable to join the Metropolitan Police, Sevenoaks, Brighton, London Polytechnic and Haywards Heath.

The tournament was split into two leagues with the top two from each going through to the semi-finals.

The opening game set the pace for the evening as a confident Hastings beat a strong Haywards Heath 3-2 with goals from Clive Benson (2) and Dave Lee.

The Poly team, which included two stalwarts of the all-conquering 1990's team, won 4-2 against Brighton, Haywards Heath were too strong for Sevenoaks and the Police struggled against the Brighton attack.

Hastings romped home 3-0 against Sevenoaks which included one of the best goals Lee has ever scored, a storming shot from eight metres. The final game of this section ended in a 3-3 draw between the the Poly and the Met.

A break for the men's teams saw Hastings Ladies claim a spirited 3-3 draw against an All Stars team which included a number of the country's top lady players.

Hastings secured a solid 4-0 win over Brighton in the semi-finals and Haywards Heath joined them in the final.

The first half ended with Hastings four goals down after some determined attacks from the visitors. A few choice words at half time saw Hastings pull a goal back inside the first minute and they went on to launch numerous attacks but were rewarded with just one penalty, netted by Alexei Philippidis to make the final score 4-2.
