Water polo team splashes out in Dordrecht

THE annual Water Polo Tournament in Hastings' twin town Dordrecht is the return match for the Observer Trophy Tournament held each year during Hastings week here in Hastings.

This year a small but strong squad of Hastings players travelled last weekend to Dordrecht to play three games against two Dordrecht teams and one from nearby Breda.

The first game, against the 6th team, started very well with goals from Clive Benson and Tim Pearce leading them into the second half with a 2-0 advantage.

The second half proved a much harder affair and even though Hastings managed to net three more goals from Tom Hamm, William Greenhouse and Dave Lee the game finished 5-6 down with a crunching last two minutes of end-to-end polo.

Bruised but determined the second game against the 7th team was a well played victory for Hastings 5-1 with goals from Benson (3), Lee and Vogel.

The final game against SPG gave Hastings a chance to show their tactical skill with a win by 4-1, thanks to a great deal of hard swimming from all members of the team and a very clever goal from tournament top scorer Benson, as well as thoughtful defending from Duncan Izzard and his team mates at the back.
