Walkover secures top two finish

South Saxons made certain of a top two finish without even hitting a ball.

The Hastings club clinched the win they needed to make certain of finishing at least second via a 5-0 walkover after opponents East Grinstead IV failed to raise a team for last weekend’s game.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish (pictured left), who was unavailable for the match in any case, said: “We were awarded a 5-0 victory, but I was a bit annoyed because I was expecting more than 5-0.”

Bottom-of-the-table Grinstead have yet to pick up a point from 18 fixtures, but despite failing to raise a fourth team, they did manage to field a fifth side for a Sussex Open Hockey League Division Four match.

In fact, it’s the second successive season that Grinstead have failed to make the trip to Horntye Park Sports Complex after they cried off from the corresponding fixture last term on the very same weekend.

With second spot - and a potential promotion play-off against the runners-up in Kent - safely in the bag, Saxons can focus on attempting to bridge a four-point deficit to leaders Horsham II over the final three games.
