Tons of fun at centenary event

The centenary Hastings Open Bowls Tournament was declared a resounding success.

The 100th anniversary tournament drew to a close at the bowling greens in White Rock Gardens on Saturday having run throughout the previous week.

Tournament chairman Gordon Baldock said in his closing address that the event had gone well with very positive feedback received from competitors who looked forward to returning next year.

It was a superb week of high quality bowling especially, as expected, in the later rounds even though conditions were at times difficult because of occasional gusty winds and showers.

The tournament culminated with some closely contested finals, including the men’s singles where Trevor Logan (White Rock) edged out Michael Stone (Bexhill BC) 21-19. Alec Martin (Horam BC) and Stone pipped Ken Bones and Trevor Roberts (both Rosemount BC) 17-16 in the men’s pairs.

The open triples went to an extra end before Daniel and Mike Bennett (both Backworth BC, Cramlington) and Logan narrowly got the better of Glen Newton and Shaun Godfrey (both Rosemount BC) and Carl Dyer (Spartan BC) 14-13. Dyer played as substitute in the final for Nick Wingfield, who was competing in the National Championships.

Carol Anderson (Swale BC, Gillingham) beat Pat Warner (White Rock BC) 21-14 in the ladies’ singles, while in the ladies’ pairs, Lorraine Milburn and Maxine Clarkson (both White Rock) defeated Carrie Hadfield and Linda Nye (both Sidley Martlets BC) 18-13.
