Tennis ace scoops world silver
Tennis talent Frances Candy won a silver medal at the 2015 Super-Seniors World Team Championships.
The St Leonards-based player was a key figure in the Great Britain team which reached the final of the Alice Marble Cup for over-60 women.
Great Britain beat the United States to clinch the 2014 title in Turkey last October, but the tables were turned in the 2015 version, which took place in France.
Candy won all three of her singles matches throughout the course of the event and was very pleased with how she played on the clay courts of La Baule, despite the windy conditions.
Great Britain won Group B courtesy of 3-0 victories over South Africa and Turkey. Candy beat Sharon van der Schyff 6-1, 6-1 in the number one singles match against South Africa and saw off Seyhan Mungan by the same score against Turkey.
Second seeds Great Britain then pipped fifth seeds France 2-1 in an epic semi-final. Candy won a three-hour battle against Caroline Glaszmann 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and Britain edged the deciding doubles rubber 7-5 in the final set after trailing 4-1.
Candy came down with a bug, however, and missed the final against the United States, which Britain lost 2-1 after losing both singles matches in straight sets.
Rye LTC head coach Candy has now won four silver medals for Great Britain in global team events, in addition to last year’s gold and several bronze medals won in the past.
Candy has been invited to represent the International Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain against the IC of USA for the Ted Avory Cup in Charleston, South Carolina, at the end of August.
She and the Great Britain team have also been invited to the All-England Club Wimbledon during the upcoming grand slam tournament to acknowledge their success in Turkey last year.
