Super Saxons score 13

South Saxons Hockey Club bounced back from its first defeat in 30 games in the best possible fashion.

The Hastings-based outfit ran out 13-1 winners at home to Worthing III in a one-sided South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One fixture on Saturday.

It took Saxons a while to get used to a new, more attacking 4-3-1-2 formation, but they played some very good hockey and tore their opponents apart.

Man of the match Dave Draper scored five goals and fellow forward Jamie Busbridge bagged a hat-trick. Paddy Cornish weighed in with two, and there was one each for Dan Burnett, George Eldridge and Alex Coombs.

Captain Pete Watters said: “We said before the game ‘let’s go and show that last week (when they lost 7-1 away to leaders Lewes II) was a bit of a blip and prove we’re still one of the top teams in this league’. I say this every week, but the crazy thing is we could’ve scored even more.”

A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.

Standings (all played five matches): 1 Lewes II 15pts, 2 SOUTH SAXONS 12, 3 Penguin 12, 4 Lewes III 10, 5 East Grinstead IV 7, 6 Crowborough 7, 7 Middleton & Bognor 6, 8 Worthing III 6, 9 Eastbourne III 5, 10 Brighton & Hove III 4, 11 Southwick 3, 12 Crawley II 0.
