SOUTHWICK STILL HAVE MUCH TO DO

A SATURDAY ending with soggy kit in cricket coffins found unexpected leaders Southwick still heading the championship after defeating Arundel '” but only because champions Findon, drawing, managed just seven deliveries at the last Pagham batsmen.

It's the halfway mark and Findon have played only three matches at home. Southwick have played five of eight at The Green and this Saturday are away to an ambitious Broadwater side who may have matchwinning all-rounder Joe Owen back after breaking a hand.

Findon and Pagham agreed at 7.45pm to continue through ever heavier rain. The champions appreciated Pagham's positive attitude in maintinaing interest in Findon's 214. They posted that after an early tea, with an unbroken stand of 95 between John Rogers (53) and Bath University student Andy Vickerstaff (52) who was to run himself out short of a second fifty on Sunday.

In the end, fielding for Findon was soapy and bowling a ludicrous idea off anything longer than a two-pace run-up.

Goring's new local-resident Zimbabwean, Gus McVey made 81 in 65 balls through the British drizzle but it was a crawl to 200 once Chris Bird's dismissal broke their second-wicket partnership at 109. In a match neither side wanted to lose, Lindfield opted to survive. They did so, with opener Kevin Chamberlain, dropped thrice in his 65 not out, their defying factor in 120 for seven.

Chippingdale lost the lead in Division 4 after a hard-earned draw at home to Ram. Skipper Graham Avinou's plan to insert and invert Ram reached 116 for seven, aided by fine catches from Ashley Waymark, Avinou himself and Mark Adams.

But the Ram tail wagged to an unscripted 202 for nine. From 97 for five in reply, following some entertaining strokes from Jez Scrace and Lee Chambers, Adams and Faisal Khan steadied, then secured a draw.
