Saxons spy final frontier

South Saxons are gunning to reach the Sussex Plate final for the second time in three seasons.

But the 2010 winners will be determined to avoid a repeat of their 2011 semi-final defeat against lower grade opposition when they travel to St Francis tomorrow (Saturday).

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “It’s a game obviously we should win on paper, but we still need to attack it in the right frame of mind, be professional about it and play it in the right way otherwise we could get turned over.”

The Hastings club finished second in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One, while St Francis are currently fourth in the league below, Sussex Open Hockey League Division Two.

The other semi-final is between Penguin, who finished a place below Saxons, and a Littlehampton side which is seventh in Sussex Open League Division Two. The final is scheduled for Sunday April 29.

Sam Bunday is unavailable and Charlie Campbell has undergone an operation which will keep him out for the rest of the season, but Pete Watters will return and Dom Ford is set to be added to the squad.
