Saxons romp to 11-goal victory

SOUTH Saxons romped to an 11-0 victory over Middleton & Bognor in a one-sided Sussex Hockey Plate match on Saturday.

The Hastings club's front side went into the clash full of confidence and their optimism was not misplaced as they immediately created a host of chances.

Toby Reed opened the scoring and minutes later Des Smith doubled the advantage. Middleton managed to remain in the game for much of the first half but were unable to really trouble the Saxons goal as they found their path blocked by the home defence.

A precisely drilled pass from John Morgan found Dan Burnett in space and he guided the ball into the roof of the net for a commanding 3-0 half time lead.

The pressure applied in the first half paid dividends after the interval as a demoralised Middleton seemed to slacken. Saxons took advantage by playing some quality hockey which resulted in another eight goals.

Billy Whizz showed predatory form to find the backboard on four occasions, while Smith doubled his tally, as well as hitting the post and the crossbar. Dave White got on the scoresheet with a ferocious strike from the top of the area and newly appointed captain Burnett went on to complete his hat-trick as the visitors crumbled.

Saxons will be pleased with this performance in their first competitive match of the campaign as the fruits of the early training work was borne out to devastating effect. Matchball sponsors were BeSure Security.

Saxons open their Kent & Sussex Division One programme tomorrow (Saturday) with a trip to Gillingham Anchorians.
