South Saxons’ players are enjoying the more physical nature of South Hockey League Kent/Sussex Regional 2 following their promotion last season.

That’s the view of captain Paddy Cornish, who believes that Saxons’ impressive start to the new term is due to their resilience at the back.

“We’re defending very well at the moment,” Cornish said. “We are frustrating teams and taking our chances when they come to us.”

On the demands of stepping up a level, Cornish said: “It’s different to last year, where we had pressure to win every match, whereas now we are probably expected to lose. Other sides don’t really know what to expect, which is probably working in our favour.”

Saxons’ first home game of the season is tomorrow (Saturday) against third-placed Blackheath & OE as they look to build on the four points garnered from their opening two games. Push-back is 1.30pm.
