Saxons beaten by Lewes

A goal in either half saw Saxons slump to a second successive South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2 defeat following the 10-0 mauling at the hands of leaders Blackheath & OE the previous weekend.

However, the mood prior to push-back within the team was good, with captain Paddy Cornish banishing all thoughts of the previous game and wiping the slate clean.

The flow of Saxons’ play was much-improved and they grew in confidence, yet it was Lewes who opened the scoring. The hosts continued to push for an equaliser, but it did not materialise and they went in at half time 1-0 down.

Saxons remained confident knowing that they overturned a two-goal deficit in their previous home game against King’s & Alleyn’s, and they continued to keep the performance level high despite the scoreline.

Saxons pressed the experienced Lewes defence, earning a few short corners, but failed to convert any. With the home side pushing for an equaliser, Lewes added a second from a short corner that was slipped under the diving Stew Feakes.

Saxons pressed and hounded Lewes in an attempt to reduce the arrears as the game opened up in the final 10 minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Things are very tight down at the foot of the table with the bottom four teams separated by four points. Saxons are two places and two points above the basement.
