Rocket Man is Over the Moon

Derek Watts is a very happy Rooks supporter after scooping the £127.50 first prize in the February 'Pan for Gold' Supporters Club draw held last Saturday before the game against the Storts.

Derek's been a member of the Lewes FC Supporters Club since it was formed in 2004 and has been paying his 5 a month subscription ever since. Half the sub goes to help improving things for the club and the fans and half comes back in monthly cash prize money.

Derek is very active with Rocket Radio, the local community station that broadcasts each year for a short time around November 5.

When on air and there's a Lewes FC game on, home or away, he phones me for live updates and I get to do my best 'Mottie' impersonation. If we score I phone him. The system works well.

Other cash prize winners last Saturday were John Edwards, Mark Jarvis and William Ball. A total of 255 was distributed. Interested in joining? Full details in this column next week or visit www.lewesfc.com

We get excellent publicity from The Sussex Express these days (Thanks David! Sports Ed) but getting posters up advertising our home games is still a great way to spread the word and get the names of match sponsors out and about.

A well-oiled publicity machine swings into action in the week or so before a home game is due when John Brownbridge sends out an alert that posters can be downloaded from the home page on the official website (see above). Then volunteers print off posters and find homes for them all over town.

However, there's no such thing as too much publicity so if you know of a place where a poster could be displayed (with the agreement of the site owner) please either take the initiative yourself or let us know the details. You can also be automatically sent a poster if you send an email request to [email protected]

A face many recognised at the Dripping Pan last Saturday was that of actor Mark Williams, famous for the 'Suit You Sir' sketch in The Fast Show.

Mark is a regular in the Lord Nelson pub in Trafalgar Street, Brighton; the pub is also my 'branch office', and I like to think that the Lewes FC posters I regularly put up in there have helped draw his attention to the Mighty Rooks.

Only a Norwegian would be prepared to pay 25 for a pair of the Blue Square 'Keepie Uppie' balls! It happened in the Rook Inn after the game against Bishop's Stortford.

The gentleman concerned had seen the square balls being demonstrated by lads on the pitch at half time and thought they would make a splendid souvenir to take home to the fjords.

A deal was promptly struck and the 25 went towards the team's hotel expenses in respect of this Sunday's game at Newport (kick off 1pm).

By the way, here's another snippet of keepie uppie trivia to add to last week's: Agim Agushi, from Kosova, drove over five miles on a twisting road whilst all the time heading a ball through the sunroof of his car in 2004!
