Robertson claims Drago scalp

Jimmy Robertson has reached the final round of qualifying for the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.

The Bexhill cueman completed a 10-8 victory over Tony Drago on Thursday evening to set up a clash with 1997 champion Ken Doherty on Sunday.

Robertson, the world no.61, took the opening four frames en route to a 6-3 lead after the first session at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, on Wednesday afternoon.

World no.42 Drago clinched the opening frame of the second session 24 hours later only for Robertson, a former English Amateur Champion, to reel off three in a row to stand on the cusp of victory at 9-4.

Drago, from Malta, cleared from brown to black to scrape through the 14th and claimed the subsequent three frames before 24-year-old Robertson finally got over the line thanks to a break of 65 in frame 18.

Robertson, who owns O’Sullivan’s Snooker Club in Bexhill, will be attempting to reach the venue stage of a ranking event for the first time in his career.

St Leonards-based Mark Davis, the world no.22, will join the fray at the final qualifying round stage on Saturday when he takes on 35th-ranked Rory McLeod.
