Priory duo lead from the front

HASTINGS Priory duo Natasha Maharaj-Newman and Melissa Ferguson led from the front to help Sussex under-13s win the South East Counties Championship.

The Helenswood School pair formed the opening batting partnership, forging a series of excellent stands to provide the foundation for Sussex to go on to clinch the Division One title.

Natasha, who was selected as captain, scored 322 runs at an average of 46 to finish the season as top scorer for the second year running and Melissa compiled 125 runs. Both girls also took wickets at vital times - Natasha bagging nine at an average of 17.22 - and led the way with their committed displays in the field.

While the campaign was all about teamwork, the player of the season award went to Natasha who captained the team with calmness and authority

Natasha has also been selected for the MCC/Lord's Taverners Cricketer of the Year competition (ladies' u19 category) to be held at Lord's.
