Pre-season rugby tournament

Rye Rugby Club will stage its annual pre-season tournament at New Road today (Sunday).

Six teams have confirmed their intention to take part with the likes of Ash, Burgess Hill, Sittingbourne, Tunbridge Wells and Whitstable joining the hosts.

But just how many clubs will turn up on the day, as ever, is anyone’s guess as invariably some sides turn up unexpectedly and others that were expected don’t show.

Rye RFC chairman Tony Pierce said: “We’re looking forward to what should be a really good day. It’s a good opportunity to have a run round and blow away the cobwebs.”

The format will be decided today depending how many teams arrive. The action is due to start around 12.30pm and continue until late afternoon/early evening. Off the field, the bar will be open and there will also be a barbecue.

“Training’s been going very well indeed,” added Pierce. “Everybody seems very much up for it and we’ve been getting low 20s virtually every session which is great because you can do so much more.”
