Harriers duly lifted the Southern Women’s track and field title on Saturday and they did it in style by winning their own event at the K2 in Crawley.

The new Division 1 champions edged out Harlow AC by nine points .

The match saw strong performances across the board from the under-15, under-17 and senior women, with 15 first places in track and field disciplines.

The result was sealed when Katie Grant, Voke Ogueh, Mollie Beale and Kaitlyn Slater-Barnes won the U15 4x100m relay in 56.2 seconds, and Lana Shaw, Laura Penfold, Amy Radcliffe and Brittany Croydon-Dempster took the senior race in 53.1 seconds.

Radcliffe was also part of the winning quartet in the 4x400m relay, where she joined Katherine Roberts, Shannon Bowles and Lucie Venables to clock 5:00.3.

Team manager Linda Tullett said afterwards: “It was a brilliant performance all round. I am an extremely proud team manager. Every athlete who competed put in 100 per cent.”

There was also success for the club’s road runners, with personal best times sent tumbling in Brighton as the Harriers turned out in force to run the Wednesday evening Phoenix 10k. In total 23 club members raced, with Phil Payne (37:59), Barry Tullett (40:50) and Jack Chivers (41:11) all recording their best ever time over the distance despite the unrelenting heat.

Up ahead, Tom Mullen was ninth in 35:41, and Phil Hardaway 13th in 36:14. Jessica Colley, back from university for the summer, was fourth woman in an impressive 41:27.

Meanwhile five lucky Harriers took part in the five-mile Olympic Anniversary race in east London on Sunday, running on a traffic-free course around the Olympic Park in Stratford before a final 300min the stadium itself.
