Park bowlers run ex-world champ close

TWO talented young players from Egerton Park Indoor Bowls Club have come within a shot of defeating a former World Champion.

Teenage duo Stuart Holland jnr and Kevin Carrie were pipped 18-17 by one time global top dog David Miller and Matthew Ives (Horsham) in a compelling EBA National Pairs area semi-final on Sunday.

Yet it could have been even better for the Bexhill boys on away territory. They were 16-5 up at one point and came within a whisker of pulling off a major upset on the final end, but Carrie's final delivery was narrowly off target.

"They got beaten," said Holland's father Stuart snr, "but it was a terrific game."

A busy week for Holland jnr continued on Wednesday with a 22-14 victory over Tony Redshaw (Wealden) in the area semi-final of the EBA National Singles. He now plays Miller in the final.

Next up is a trip to Nottingham on Saturday February 5 to contest the finals of the EBA National under-25 Championships.

Further success for the club has been supplied by 16-year-old Zoe Shorey, who has claimed the English Bowls Youth Development Scheme area title.
