Golf star Ben Evans is set to make his first outing of the new year on the European Tour.
The Staplecross-based professional is in the field for the 105th BMW South African Open Championship hosted by City of Ekurhuleni, which starts tomorrow (Thursday) and continues until Sunday.
The second oldest national open in world golf returns to Glendower Golf Club and the great Ernie Els is the tournament host.
Evans is looking forward to a full season on the European Tour in 2016 having scraped into the all-important top 110 on the season-long Race to Dubai rankings in 2015.
He has already played in one event on the 2016 schedule, finishing tied 41st at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, also in South Africa, in late November.
Evans, who turned 29 last month, will be eligible for just about every European Tour event this year outside of the majors and World Golf Championships.
Last year he was only able to get into 21 tournaments, many of them lower profile ones, but managed to earn his European Tour ‘card’ for 2016 courtesy of nine top 20 finishes, including top 10 places in Russia and Morocco.
Evans lies 334th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
