New-look bowls event is a success

The revamped Bexhill Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament has been hailed a success.

After being cancelled last year due to a lack of entries, the event was held at The Polegrove over the three days of the bank holiday weekend.

Instead of holding knockout competitions with a finals’ day at the end of the week, the tournament was played on a points system with each category being wrapped up in a single day and prizes presented each evening.

The opening day - which saw the pairs title decided - was hit by rain but the other two days were played out in fine conditions.

Tournament honorary general secretary Carol Sutton said: “It poured with rain on Saturday but everybody still enjoyed it. It was very successful and our greens were very good. We would like to thank John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance and Rother District Council.”

Although entry numbers were sufficient for the tournament to take place this year, tournament officials would like more people to help out behind the scenes. Anyone interested should contact Carol on (01323) 761865.
