More play-off agony for Saxons

South Saxons’ promotion hopes ended in play-off disappointment for the second year running.

Having lost 3-0 to Tunbridge Wells last term, Saxons were beaten 3-1 by Ashford II in this season’s shoot-out at Holcombe Hockey Club on Saturday.

Ashford, who finished second in South Hockey League Kent Area - Division One, gained the upper hand after 15 minutes as a result of a mistake from George Deaves in the Saxons goal.

But after a period of Saxons possession, Ashford caught the Hastings team on the counter-attack and a good finish from one of their forwards ensured they went in at half time 2-0 up.

A third Ashford goal came completely out of the blue 10 minutes into the second half before Saxons nabbed a consolation through man of the match George Eldridge.

Saxons will remain in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One and will hope to make it fourth time lucky by finally winning the title after three consecutive second place finishes.
