St Leonards-based Mark Davis won 6-3 in his second round tie against former world champion Ken Doherty, but Bexhill cueman Jimmy Robertson was beaten 6-2 by Chinese potter Liang Wenbo.

World number 20 Davis made a blistering start with a brilliant break of 137 in the opening frame. Doherty, ranked 47, won the next aided by a run of 51 and although Davis edged the third, a 67 helped give Doherty the fourth to make it 2-2 at the interval.

Doherty scored only 14 points as Davis clinched the next two frames, helped by a break of 64 in the sixth. A run of 55 enabled Doherty to make it 4-3, but Davis won the eighth and ninth frames to seal victory.

His reward will be a third round meeting with Stephen Maguire or Jamie Cope on Monday or Tuesday. Davis previously saw off Rhys Clark 6-1 in the first round.

World number 38 Robertson narrowly lost the opening frame of his match against 29th-ranked Wenbo on the black, but comfortably took the next two, making a top break of 53 in frame two.

That was as good as it got, however, because Wenbo won the next five frames to clinch victory. The left-hander knocked in runs of 53, 93 and 84 along the way.
