Lotti follows in mother’s oar strokes

Winchelsea resident Lotti Trigle is stroking the Oxford Blue Boat in the Newton Women’s Boat Race on Sunday in Henley-on-Thames.

Lotti will be following in the footsteps of her mother, Claremont School teacher Monica Esslin-Peard, who rowed in the Blue Boat on the same day 30 years ago.

“It’s a huge honour to stroke the Blue Boat,” said Lotti. “Just like my mother, I started rowing at Oxford. It’s the perfect all-round challenge - timing, technique and overall fitness are vital to survive the row over the Henley course.”

Lotti and Monica are the first mother and daughter to row in Boat Races – albeit 30 years apart.

Monica, director of music at Claremont School, commented: “I am thrilled that my daughter is rowing exactly 30

years to the day after I rowed in a Boat Race. It’s a great example of endeavour, hard work and commitment.”

Lotti has been working locally in Udimore during her holidays and will be returning to the Rother area in the summer after she completes her degree in Classics at Trinity College, Oxford.
