Lights go out as Saxons win again

Alex Coombs (2) and James Bunday were on target as Saxons made it 16 points from a possible 18 in Sussex Open Hockey League Division One.

With Dan Burnett and Andrew Orr absent, and Jamie Busbridge struggling with a calf injury, Saxons called upon James Bunday, Ollie Beal and Ed Hooton.

The away side started the game well. Chris Meredith went close with a couple of reverse stick efforts before Coombs continued his fine goalscoring form by putting away a rebound from a short corner routine.

Despite continuing to dominate, Saxons failed to create any clearcut chances and a clinical finish from a short corner by St Francis meant the first half finished 1-1.

Bunday put Saxons ahead again with an instinctive finish. With Beal looking more and more of a threat, man of the match Coombs bagged his second with a mazy run and finish.

Saxons’ rhythm was broken up by the floodlights tripping out every five minutes and during these disruptions St Francis pulled a goal back from another short corner.

St Francis then had the opportunity to level things up from a short corner, but the lights went out for what was to be the final time. The umpires abandoned the game seven minutes from the end and the result stood.

Second-placed Saxons will host leaders Hailsham this coming Saturday knowing that a victory will take them to the top of the table. Push-back at Horntye Park is 1.30pm.
