KIRKHAM TON WINS CUP TIE

A MAGNIFICENT century from opener Steve Kirkham gained Littlehampton a place in the second round of the Sussex Cup on Sunday, when they defeated Roffey by five wickets.

Having lost opening partner Richard Vokes in the first over, Kirkham went on to compile his maiden first-team ton, smashing two sixes and 14 fours in the process.

Littlehampton captain Stuart Stoneham was in no doubt as to Kirkham's ability: "He's a good young player and should be getting big scores for us more regularly."

Kirkham looks a classy batsman, but, like most youngsters, a rush of blood to the head is so often his undoing. Not on Sunday, though, even if he was dropped twice by Roffey fieldsmen from a simplish caught-and-bowled on 23 and a harder chance to mid-off at 68.
