King reigns supreme with triple crown

The evergreen Sheila King, a stalwart of table tennis in Hastings, was a triple winner at the 2012 Eastbourne Closed Championships.

King beat her Tigers TTC clubmate Pam Winter at Shinewater Sports Centre on Saturday to regain a ladies’ singles title she last won in 2003.

She also clinched the ladies’ doubles for the first time since 2000. King and Sally Glocking defeated Winter and Kim Shearer 11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 in the final.

King got the better of Winter for a third time in the mixed doubles decider. King was partnered by Sam Collins (Hollington TTC) in another event she hadn’t won since 2000 and Winter teamed up with Andy Summers.

The Bexhillians TTC duo of Summers and Mark Owens saw off Collins and Rory Scott in three games to net the men’s doubles, while Summers overcame King in the semi-finals of the veterans’ singles.

Collins played well to take Scott to five games in the second round of the men’s singles, Scott being the number one seed and eventual winner.
