H&B defeated a well-organised Southwark side by playing with the determination and skills that were missing in the previous weekend’s home defeat to Beccehamian.

In wet and windy conditions, Southwark took an early lead in this Kent One fixture with a well-struck penalty awarded for offside.

The H&B forwards played well and put a great deal of pressure on the home defence, which paid off with Steve McManus scoring a good try off the back of a maul following a lineout. Harry Foster kicked the conversion to put H&B into a 7-3 lead.

Lancers regained the initiative after a missed tackle allowed centre Frith to score a try which was converted by Redgrave for a 10-7 half time advantage.

In the second half, the H&B forwards worked well together and started to dominate the opposition. They were rewarded with a John Hannagarth try under the posts after the scrum had controlled the ball well. Foster converted to make it 14-10.

Although Southwark were never completely out of the game, from this point onwards H&B always had control. The forwards were dominating set ball situations and the backs were punching holes in the home defence.

Jimmy Adams fed the ball to outside centre Chaz Ackerley, who put winger Bruce Steadman away for good team try in the corner, making it 19-10.

Lancers came back with another well-struck penalty, but Foster sealed H&B’s victory with a penalty awarded for diving over in the ruck.
