Howzat for a double: Ryan and Tanya are Sussex's best

TWO cricket starlets are celebrating being named as Sussex player of the year for their respective squads.

Felpham Community College pair Ryan Maskell and Tanya Wake have been rewarded for great seasons and are being tipped for big things in the future.

Ryan, 12, has been playing cricket for Sussex as a wicketkeeper/batsman since he was nine. He has been named Sussex under-12 player of the year for the second year running.

He scored 330 runs for Sussex under-12s this season, including a highest score of 81 against Somerset. He also struck 69 versus Kent and an unbeaten 58 not out against Essex.

Ryan plays club cricket for Bognor Regis colts and adult cricket for Aldwick CC.

Playing for Bognor Colts, Ryan scored three hundreds in festival week and he scored his first 50 in men’s cricket for Aldwick this season.

His dad David said: “We’re all really proud of all he’s achieved.”

Tanya, 13, started with Felpham at the age of seven before they merged with Bognor. She now plays for a variety of age groups.

She got into the Sussex girls’ set-up and has enjoyed four successful seasons with them, captaining the side for two.

She is an integral part of the side with key performances with the bat and ball, including bowling figures of three for two this season against Essex.

She was called up to Sussex under-15s for a national competition in 2009 and will play for them again next season.

Tanya has won awards for club, area and county, including the Holly Colvin Award for the western area, and has now been named Sussex under-13s player of the
year.

She has already made her debut for the Bognor CC Sunday XI. Tanya has also shone for ladies and girls’ teams at Littlehampton CC – and amazingly, she still has time for plenty of other sports too.

She plays football – in goal – for Predator Tigers. She plays netball and rounders for her school team. Her mum Liz said: “Her dream is to play cricket for England women.”
