Holt brothers inspire Holbrook charge

Andy Etherington and Nick Holt helped themselves to five tries between them as Holbrook leapt up two places in the Sussex 1 table with a 36-7 defeat of Newick.

Both teams served up some entertaining rugby, but it was Holbrook’s Rob Haggert and Greg Holt who proved the difference - Holt combining well with brother Nick to set Etherington away for the opening try, converted by Alex Meredith.

That prompted a sustained period of pressure which was rewarded when Greg Holt collected a loose Newick clearance and sparked a three quarters move which saw Matt Sprigge go over for a converted try and a 14-0 advantage at the break.

The second half started with a bang for Holbrook as Nick Holt benefitted from a tremendous 50 metre surge by prop Haggert, which included an outrageous dummy, to score another converted try for a 21-0 lead. Newick responded with a spell of pressure and a score of their own, but poor kicking from defence handed tries to Etherington and the tireless Nick Holt, who added another after a neat exchange between Greg and Meredith.

Skipper Paul Davey said: “We have worked hard in training and we do need to put in some more work in if we are to finish the season strongly.”
