HOCKEY: Worthing Ladies score just two this week - but still win

AFTER smashing home 30 goals last week, Worthing Ladies went a whole half without scoring on Saturday before eventually defeating Burgess Hill 2-1 in the Sussex League Premier Division.

Burgess Hill opened the scoring early in the second half with a breakaway goal, but Worthing equalised almost immediately when a shot from Andie Chambers, Worthing's 10-goal hero last week, was deflected in.

Chambers then got the winner from another short corner, and Worthing captain Kirsty Pickett said: "It wasn't a great result after last week, and we were lucky to win.

"I'm hoping it's the reality check we need to play well this week. We have Horsham 3rd, who are fourth, so we need to up our game."

Youngsters Hannah Sayward and Georgia Aviss both starred on their Worthing first-team debuts.

Worthing's men stayed second in the Kent/Sussex Regional League after a 3-2 win at King's College London. Alex Warner's brace took his total to 15 for the season, and Bryan Lock was also on target.

In Division 1, Penguin lost 3-1 at Mid-Sussex with 16-year-old Moaz Hamid scoring their goal.

Littlehampton conceded four goals in the last 20 minutes to lose 7-3 at Sussex League Division 1 leaders Brighton and Hove 4th.

Skipper Jon Miles' deflected shot gave Littlehampton an early lead but Brighton soon led 2-1. James Macdonald equalised with his first goal of the season, and Miles then fired Littlehampton ahead but Brighton levelled before half-time.

Miles hit a post early in the second half before Brighton took control and hit four more goals, despite several excellent saves by Littlehampton keeper Nathan Keeley.

Penguin's 2nd team won 5-3 against Crowborough, with Jon Rogers, with two, Stuart Steel and Rich Strangwick among the scorers. Penguin's 3rd team went top of Sussex League Division 3 with a 4-1 win at Crawley.
