H&B power to biggest victory

Hastings & Bexhill romped to their biggest win of the season on Saturday.

The rugby club avenged a 9-5 loss away to Cranbrook in November with a crushing 62-13 victory in the reverse fixture at William Parker Sports College.

Head coach Kevin Smith said: “Everything went well, but the scoreline flattered us a bit. A young, fit Cranbrook side did trouble us at times and it was a good, hard-fought game. It wasn’t a walkover, we worked hard for that.”

H&B were 12-0 up inside the first 10 minutes of the Kent One fixture and the game was pretty much over by half time as the home side led 38-8. H&B added a further 24 points in the second half to round-off an emphatic win.

Tryscorers were Ben Davies, Matt Harbord (2), Jimmy Adams, Anthony Roche, Mark Piotrowski (2), Piers Claughton, Kit Claughton and Ben Campbell. The rest of the points came from the boot of Harbord, pictured.

Elsewhere, Rye’s hopes of a top half finish in Sussex One suffered a setback when they were edged out 13-11 at home to second-bottom Eastbourne II.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
