Nessling close to Classic glory

The assistant playing professional at Cooden Beach Golf Club was two shots behind the winner of the Tylney Park Classic at Tylney Park Golf Club near Hook in Hampshire.

Nessling carded a three-under-par 69 in the team pro-am which took place the day before the main event and began the tournament itself with an identical score to trail leader Luke Bone, of Farnham Golf Club, by two strokes.

The 22-year-old carded six birdies and an eagle as he recovered well from a double bogey on his first hole. Incidentally, the cut in a 36-hole event containing some 130 players fell at two-over-par.

In round two, Nessling was in the last group alongside Bone and Richard Wallis, the PGA South Region Order of Merit leader who played in the PGA Championship at Wentworth and made the cut in the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

The round became very much nip and tuck with Nessling going one ahead at the 12th only for Wallis to level at the 13th and then edge in front himself courtesy of a birdie at the par five 14th.

Nessling’s putt to draw level again at the 17th lipped out and he ended up a further shot back after parring the last with Wallis making birdie. A second round 72 gave Nessling a three-under total of 141.
