Glynde's stiff start

THE first round of the Intersport of Lewes Trophy takes place tomorrow.

The top match of the round is the clash between last year's league winners Glynde and runners-up Seaford. There is also a repeat of the Intersport of Lewes Plate final between Herstmonceux and Lewes St Michaels.

There is one other all-first division match between newly-promoted Hellingly, who travel to Heathfield Park. The winners will play in the second round the following Saturday while the losers go into the Plate.

The East Sussex League proper starts on Saturday, May 6. Glynde seek to make it an unprecedented four championships in a row while they will be challenged by Seaford, captained by former Sussex player Colin Wells.

There are four additional teams, including new club Isfield, making 50 clubs in all and 107 teams the league which now has 11 divisions.

Tomorrow - Intersport of Lewes Trophy first round (2pm): Lewes St Michaels v Herstmonceux, Crowborough v Uckfield Anderida, Crowhurst Park v Willingdon, Barcombe v Rye, Chiddingly v Ringmer, Heathfield Park v Hellingly, DPB Eastbourne v Battle, Glynde & Beddingham v Seaford.

Friendlies: Burwash Weald v Heathfield Park II, Rottingdean v Lewes Priory, Hartfield v Rottingdean II.
