Wilson: We played our get out of jail card

Garry Wilson admitted that Hastings United Football Club was given a get out of jail card by the weather.

United’s FA Trophy second round qualifying tie at home to Merthyr Town was abandoned at half time yesterday (Saturday) due to a waterlogged pitch with Merthyr leading 2-0.

“It was a bit of a get out of jail card for us,” said United manager Wilson. “I don’t think he (the referee) had any option. I think for the safety of the players it was the correct decision.

“I think the referee had to start the game. Before the game the groundsmen are forking the pitch and moving the water, but as soon as the game’s played, the water gathers on the pitch.”

Goals in the first 15 minutes from Jarad Wright and Ian Traylor put the Welsh outfit in charge, and Merthyr looked comfortable despite having Rhys Baggridge sent-off for what looked like a head butt on Billy Medlock.

The match has been rearranged for Tuesday (November 17), kick-off 7.45pm. Merthyr will therefore have to make the approximately 235-mile round trip from south Wales to East Sussex twice in the space of a few days.

Normal admission prices will apply for the rearranged fixture, but United will contact the FA tomorrow on the matter of refunding the cost of admission to yesterday’s match.

As a result of the FA Trophy game being rearranged for Tuesday, United’s scheduled Ryman League Alan Turvey Trophy third round match at home to Sittingbourne will be played at a later date.
