A second half strike from Curtis Coombes and a first clean sheet since late November enabled Westfield to get the better of Ifield Galaxy in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two.

Assistant manager Martin Dobinson took charge of the side in the absence of manager Jack Stapley. He said: “On the balance of the whole game we definitely deserved to win. The first half was probably the worst 45 minutes we’ve played in the last four or five weeks, but we gave them a bit of a talking to at half time and it probably could’ve been three or four in the second half.”

Westfield had beaten the same opponents 4-1 in the reverse fixture just a fortnight previously and there was a bit of complacency in the visiting camp during a first half in which they were guilty of playing too many long balls despite a significant height disadvantage.

Martyn Durrant headed over from Harry Burchette’s free kick, while at the other end, an Ifield shot following a corner was straight at Westies goalkeeper Joe Cullip.

Westfield got the ball down more during the second period and were rewarded with a winning goal. Jamie Gravett’s initial effort was well saved and his second attempt - after Brad Owens put the ball back in - hit the post, but Coombes smashed home from six yards.

Gravett was later denied by a decent save in another one-on-one situation and a Coombes shot which was heading for the bottom corner was also well kept out.
