Video: I need better from everyone, says Common boss

Little Common player-manager Russell Eldridge has admitted to doing some soul-searching in a bid to get the football club back to winning ways.

The Commoners lost both their games over the past week, including a cup tie on penalties, and have picked up just one point from their last five Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One matches.

Speaking after the Division One Challenge Cup exit to Langney Wanderers on Tuesday night (when Common lost 3-2 on spot-kicks after a 2-2 draw), Eldridge said: “Before the game I had a few stern words with the boys.

“I said ‘I’ve had a look at myself as a manager and you need to start taking a look at yourselves as players in terms of the results and performances that we’re turning in because they’ve been far too inconsistent’.

“I need better from everyone, including myself, and that’s something we’ve got to work on moving forward and don’t accept second best.”

Common have slipped to 10th in the league and are already eight points outside the top four. Eldridge says the visit from seventh-placed Lingfield tomorrow (Saturday) is a game they really need to win.

“At this stage of the season it’s a must win game because of our poor results and performances in the league of late,” Eldridge continued. “One point in five is nowhere near good enough for the group of players that we have here.

“I can accept bad performances every now and then, but we’re more than capable of turning in better performances and I need more from all the boys. Starting this weekend, we really need to start moving forward with our league campaign.”

Common will again be missing a few players. Billy Trickett is unavailable, while Kyle Holden and Liam Foster are likely to be with Hastings United under-21s. Kick-off at the Recreation Ground is 3pm.
