Andy Atkin gave Rye a 10th minute lead and Ethan Strevett doubled their advantage in the 42nd minute, but Ringmer pulled one back through Louis Pople before half time and Rye made life difficult for themselves before securing their third successive league victory.

Rye are level points with leaders East Preston and second-placed Hassocks, but have played a game more than both.

Talking of East Preston, the early pacesetters won 7-2 away to Division Two side Little Common in round two of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup. Liam Baitup gave EP an early lead and although Russell Eldridge levelled, goals from Baitup and Joe Shelley put the visitors 3-1 up at the break.

Shaheen Sadough struck twice in the second period and Baitup netted twice more to complete a four-goal salvo. Martin Denny scored the second for a Common side which isn’t the first to suffer at the hands of EP this season and surely won’t be the last.

Westfield and Bexhill United fought out a 0-0 draw in a keenly contested Sussex Division Two derby at The Parish Field. The first hour was fairly even with little goalmouth activity before Westfield looked the stronger side in the closing half-hour and created a couple of decent opportunities.

Matt Dadswell shot straight at Bexhill goalkeeper Russell Tanner from an inviting position, while Mike Booth poked over from 12 yards after his own throughball fell kindly for him. Westfield finished with 10 men after Ross Markham was sent-off following a clash with Craig Ottley in front of the linesman.

The result ended a run of four successive defeats in all competitions for Westfield, while Bexhill are unbeaten in their last four. See Friday’s Observers for full reports on each game.
