The U’s pulled off a tremendous 2-1 extra-time win away to their League Two opponents in the Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup last night (Tuesday).

Wilson said: “It was a good night. It’s a big result no matter what competition you’re playing in. It’s their first team squad players you’re playing against.

“I thought it was a really tough ask to go there and win, but the boys were fantastic. The more the game went on, the more belief the players got and you could see a frustration creeping in to them (Crawley).

“It was a totally different type of game from what we normally play. They (the players) had to do things differently in terms of getting behind the ball, closing down, keeping a tight shape, knowing when to go forward and when to sit in.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to work on that sort of thing and the players carried out the instructions really well, which was pleasing for me and Danny (Bloor, assistant manager).

“I was really pleased with our fitness levels. Against a full time side in extra-time, we were looking fitter and sharper in the last period.”

While Crawley fielded a squad of full-time professionals, United player Sam Crabb left Eastbourne at 4.30am for a day of manual work in Basingstoke before Wilson picked him up from motorway services en route to Crawley.

“Last Tuesday we were probably a bit devastated with the result against Faversham (a 4-1 home defeat in the league),” added Wilson. “It shows what a difference a week makes.”
