Rye win, Bexhill & Sidley lose

There were mixed fortunes for three of the area’s senior football teams on Tuesday night.

Rye United won 2-1 away to Seaford Town in round two of the Sussex County League John O’Hara League Cup, but Bexhill United lost 1-0 at home to Ringmer in the same competition and Sidley United went down 3-1 at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe in Division One of the league.

Goals from Phil Rhodes and Wes Tate put Division One high-flyers Rye two-up at half time. Division Two side Seaford pulled one back and Rye had Ben Radley sent-off, but did enough to go through.

Bexhill joint manager Darrol Parris felt they should’ve beaten higher grade Ringmer only for missed chances to haunt them for the second game running. Ringmer’s goal came from a rare second half opportunity.

The controversial 53rd minute sending-off of Mark Chandler was the main talking point of Sidley’s loss. The score was 1-1 at the time and Peacehaven went on to clinch victory with two goals in the last 20 minutes. Scott McDonald had given Sidley a 23rd minute lead only for Peacehaven to level five minutes later.

Full reports and reaction will appear in Friday’s Observer.
