Rye surge into Vase last 16

The fourth round tie in Chesterfield on Saturday was a scrappy affair of few goalscoring opportunities, but in the end Rye were worthy winners.

They opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Paul Tuppenney’s free kick from around halfway was missed by the goalkeeper and Jono Richardson tapped home.

Staveley played the better football during a fairly even first half and Josh Pelling pulled off one wonder save, but Rye looked increasingly comfortable as the tie wore on.

A Scott Ramsay penalty after a foul on Matt Maclean put them two-up in the 76th minute and Sam Cole rounded-off a well-worked move for the third two minutes later.

Elsewhere on Saturday, it was a poor day for the area’s four other Sussex League clubs with three of them failing to score.

Sidley United lost 2-0 at home to Selsey in Division One, while in Division Two, Bexhill United and Little Common fought out goalless draws at home to Worthing United and Mile Oak respectively.

Westfield’s 10-match unbeaten run in Division Two came to an end with a 4-3 loss away to East Preston despite goals from Ashley Platts, David Pugh and Tom Archer.
