Rye rally for high-scoring draw

Rye United began life after Scott Price with a 3-3 draw at home to a strong and battling Hassocks outfit in Sussex County League Division One on Saturday.

Rye never went ahead, equalising three times to claim a deserved point. Matt Maclean hit two levellers before the break, before missing a hat-trick chance from the penalty spot just after the restart. Liam Upton scored United’s third with an hour gone, but neither side could find a winner.

Elswhere in Division One, Sidley United went down 1-0 at home to Chichester City. Despite dominating proceedings before half time, United couldn’t break the deadlock and were made to pay on 62 minutes when Ken Hagan dispatched a penalty following Dan Cruikshank’s foul.

In Division Two, Little Common smashed Loxwood 5-0 with three goals coming in the last ten minutes. Lewis Hole and Jamie Crone had given Common a two-goal lead by the break before Jake Sherwood, player-manager Russell Eldridge and Crone scored in the game’s closing stages.

Also in Division Two, Danny Woodley saw red for violent conduct as Westfield lost 2-0 away at Newhaven. The hosts opened the scoring on the hour before a flash-point which brought about a multiple-man brawl. With Newhaven’s ‘keeper quick to push Mike Booth following a foul, Woodley pressed his head against an opponent and was dismissed in the resulting melee. As Westfield chased the game, Newhaven doubled their lead two minutes from time.

Bexhill United also lost, despite being 2-1 up with just ten minutes left on the clock. After a goalless first-half, Josh Elliott-Noye opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Oakwood soon equalised, but Elliott-Noye bagged his second to restore United’s lead. It all went wrong on 80 minutes however, when Toby Gilbert notched an equaliser and two late goals from Cecil Thomas ensured it was a miserable trip home for Darrol Parris’ men.
